Need of a License: Master and journeyman electricians need a license to work in Rhode Island.
Who Grants a License: Electrician licenses are granted by the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training.
Contractor: A candidate must be a licensed electrical contractor, having passed an examination or the equivalent with the Division of Professional Regulation/Board of Examiners of Electricians. The candidate must be an officer of a corporation that is properly registered/certified with the State of Rhode Island.
Master Electrician: A candidate must have at least six years’ experience and must possess a journeyperson's license, which must be valid for at least two years prior to applying for a contractor's examination.
Journeyman Electrician: A candidate must have four years’ experience as a registered apprentice.
Exam Requirements: A candidate for a master electrician license or a journeyman electrician license must pass the Master Electrician Examination or the Journeyman Electrician Examination, respectively.
How to Apply for a License: A candidate for licensure must complete/send an application to the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training. The telephone to reach the department is 401-462-8000.

Fees: There is an examination fee.
Who Administers the Test: Completed application forms must be sent to: RI Dept. of Labor and Training, Professional Regulation Unit, PO Box 20247, Cranston, RI 02920-0943. Forms will be processed and exams scheduled on a first come, first serve basis.
License Renewal Requirements: Licenses must be renewed every 2 nd year on the licensee’s birthday.
